In the South the narrow strait of Messina separates Calabria from Sicily.
The capital of the region is Catanzaro (100.000 inhabitants) and is located in the centre of Calabria. The city hosts the seat of an archbishop and has some beautiful churches and a cathedral. The cultural capital Cosenza is situated north. Cosenza is a nice baroque historic city with many churches, piazzas, a huge fort and of course many nice restaurants and bars. The closest city to the Garden Resort**** Calabria is Lamezia Terme (80.000 inhabitants) – the city “between mountains and the sea” extends over the three communities Nicastro, Sambiase and San Eufemia. As the name already suggests it offers also thermal springs “Terme di Caronte” by roman origin. Lamezia offers different shopping possibilities in the centre and in shopping centres and the international airport. The biggest city in Calabria is the most southern Reggio di Calabria (180.000 inhabitants), offering a metropolitan atmosphere, various shopping possibilities as well as a long boardwalk at the sea and the national museum showing parts of the famous Magna Graecia, the Greek history of Calabria.
For all the nature seekers, in Calabria you find some nice national parks where many endangered plants and animals still live (Parco Nazionale della Calabria). The beaches in Calabria are famous for their pale sand and the turquoise colour of the sea. Even in high season you find hidden, empty beaches with enough space.
